Wildflower Hip Hoppin

Original oil painting by Navy Sloth

Some flowers are happy to sit quietly in a vase.

These ones have other ideas.

Wildflower Hip Hoppin is a bold, colourful celebration of wildflowers — full of vibrant colour, playful botanical shapes, rich texture and plenty of attitude.

My signature daisies pop up amongst the blooms, while energetic marks and layers of colour give the whole painting a wonderful sense of movement. It feels as though the flowers are swaying, dancing and generally having a rather good time.

And that’s really what this painting is about.

Happiness.

That simple, uncomplicated feeling you get when you’re surrounded by colour and nature, with nowhere you need to be and nothing you need to do except enjoy what’s in front of you.

I’ve always loved the way wildflowers seem to grow without worrying too much about the rules. They lean into one another, spill into the grass and pop up wherever they please. There’s something wonderfully carefree about that — and I think there’s a little bit of that spirit in Wildflower Hip Hoppin too.

It’s colourful, confident and just a little bit cheeky.

A wildflower meadow with the volume turned up.
