Quackers – Abstract Mixed Media Painting by Navy Sloth

Meet Quackers, my whimsical, abstract mixed media painting with a very duck theme! Yes, that’s right—yellow ducks everywhere!

Since becoming a mother, my life seems to be surrounded by ducks—my daughter absolutely loves them. I’d never painted anything cute or baby-related before, but I couldn’t find the perfect artwork for her nursery. That’s when the lightbulb went off—I could just create it myself! After all, I have a degree in illustration, so why not use those skills?

The Process

Quackers started with a simple sketch of a duck template, which I then drew onto fabric. From there, I cut out an entire army of ducks and glued them to a canvas. Once the ducks were set, I layered on white acrylic paint to bring it all together. After that, I used several shades of yellow oil paint and let them move organically around the canvas, creating a messy yet playful effect.

The result? A delightful transformation from sweet, high-street reproductions to an abstract flock of ducks with individuality, shaking their tail feathers in their own messy, joyful way.

Quackers is the ideal addition to a child’s bedroom, whether for boys or girls. It would also make a great focal point in a playroom or anywhere your little one might point and interact with it. And just for fun—making duck noises as you pass by is entirely optional (though we’ve definitely reached that level of quackers in our house).
